The annual Multicultural Wellness Fair (MWF) is a multi-agency partnering initiative that aims to reach out to culturally diverse populations in Hamilton with information and resources about mental health and wellness services. The MWF is usually held during mental health week in May. This year, marking its 5th anniversary, it will be held on October 10, 2017 in celebration of World Mental Health Day.
The idea for the MWF was born in 2012 out of the Facilitation Mental Health and Addictions Action and Inclusion Project. This outreach project found that despite there being a large culturally diverse population in Hamilton, most have not accessed and are not aware of services available to them in the community. The project also found that there are a number of barriers, myths and stigma that contribute people not accessing needed supports.
The goal of the MWF is to create a welcoming and entertaining space where people from diverse background can learn about and have access to information and resources related to mental health and wellness.
The MWF2017 committee is inviting sponsors to support the event and contribute to the mission which is to increase awareness about existing services and resources among diverse individuals mainly newcomers and immigrants. Attended by about 350 people and 35 service providers in 2016, the MWF is a great opportunity for businesses and organizations in Hamilton to get noticed and recognized.
