I am pleased to see that the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion has brought the DiverseCity onBoard program to the City of Hamilton.
Opportunity to volunteer, presents itself in many forms. One of these is that of serving as a board member of a non-profit organization. Board governance is an important and vital role for voluntary organizations.
In an increasingly diverse community and world it is essential that communities see themselves represented in the governance of the organizations and agencies that serve them. DiverseCity onBoard offers opportunities to organizations to connect with newcomer and diverse communities to connect with pre-screened candidates for their boards. It provides governance training for visible minority and newcomer board candidates and supports them in their new roles.
A lack of diversity at the board level can determine, in part, how underrepresented groups see themselves, their relevance and their place at the decision-making table. DiverseCity onBoard seeks to address this directly. By assisting boards in reflecting the communities they serve, the program contributes to making Hamilton a more inclusive city that celebrates diversity.
Working together we can contribute to a more diverse and representative non-profit sector in our community. Please join me in supporting DiverseCity onBoard.
