HCCI & HWDSB Kids Need Help Announce Press Conference Regarding Racism & Islamophobia In Hamilton High Schools

Feb 3, 2020

The Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion (HCCI) will hold a news conference with HWDSB Kids Needs Help and students at 10 am. EST Tuesday, February 4th, 2020 at City Hall (71 Main St West) to talk about high school student’s experiences of racism and Islamophobia within the public school board and offer recommendations on how schools and the HWSDB administration can tackle racism, Islamophobia, and other forms of oppression.

A report titled “Deconstructing Racism and Islamophobia” will be shared with members of the media, the public, and the HWDSB. This report is primarily based on written submissions, complaints, and discussions gathered from youth and students from HWDSB schools who agreed to share their experiences. Although schools across the HWDSB have demonstrated excellence in many areas of education, there is insufficient development in the areas of inclusiveness, anti-racism, anti-Black racism and empowerment of racialized students.
